Lamination: matte, gloss and soft-touch
Lamination is a thin film applied to the printed sheet. It protects against scuffs and moisture and changes the overall look: gloss makes colours brighter, matte looks calm and elegant, and soft-touch adds a velvety feel that customers notice as soon as they pick up the box.
For a plastic-free, easier-to-recycle alternative, water-based varnishes and coatings can often provide protection without a film.
Hot foil stamping
A heated die presses a metallic or coloured foil onto the surface. Gold, silver, copper and holographic foils are popular for logos, borders and patterns. Foil catches the light in a way that printed metallic inks cannot.
Embossing and debossing
Embossing raises part of the surface; debossing presses it in. Both add a tactile, three-dimensional detail. They can be used on their own (blind embossing) or combined with foil or print for a registered effect.
Spot UV
Spot UV applies a high-gloss varnish to selected areas only. On a matte or soft-touch background it creates a striking contrast between shiny and matte — ideal for logos, product names or patterns.

Tips for combining finishes
- Less is more: one or two well-placed effects look more premium than many.
- Foil and spot UV stand out most on matte or soft-touch backgrounds.
- Very fine details may not reproduce in foil or embossing; ask for our minimum line widths.
- Every finish needs its own artwork layer — see our print-ready artwork guide.
- Ask for a sample: finishes are best judged in the hand.
